About

Nitric oxide booster supplements combine L-arginine and L-citrulline to provide both immediate and sustained nitric oxide production for vascular support. A 2022 study showed the combination improved flow-mediated dilation more than either amino acid alone. Most evidence is extrapolated from individual component trials.

How It Works

Combination providing both substrate (L-arginine) and sustained precursor (L-citrulline) for endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS); NO activates soluble guanylate cyclase causing vasodilation; combined arginine + citrulline provides immediate + sustained NO production; often formulated with cofactors that recycle oxidized eNOS.

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Hypotension at high doses
  • Headache
  • See individual component profiles for full side effects

Drug & Supplement Interactions

  • See L-arginine and L-citrulline entries for comprehensive interaction profiles
  • PDE5 inhibitors (excessive vasodilation risk)
  • Nitrates (excessive vasodilation risk)
  • Antihypertensives (additive blood pressure lowering)
