A palpitation is a perception rather than a rhythm. It is the awareness of one's own heartbeat, described variously as fluttering, pounding, racing or a sensation of skipped beats, and the distinction matters because the sensation and the underlying electrical activity correlate imperfectly. The determination between the two requires an electrocardiographic recording during symptoms, which is why ambulatory monitoring rather than a symptom description is what settles the question.
