Silica

A trace mineral involved in collagen cross-linking and connective tissue integrity.

Silica (silicon dioxide) is a trace mineral that plays a structural role in connective tissues including hair, nails, skin, and bone. It participates in collagen cross-linking, which provides tensile strength and elasticity. The bioavailable form, orthosilicic acid (OSA), is used in supplements because elemental silicon has poor absorption. Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA, marketed as BioSil) is the most studied form. Clinical research suggests it may improve hair morphology (thickness, strength, elasticity) and nail quality. Dietary sources include whole grains, leafy greens, and beer.
