Venous return from the leg works against gravity, and it does so without a pump of its own. Blood is moved upward by the contraction of calf muscle surrounding the deep veins, and it is held against backflow by bicuspid valves spaced along the vessel. Varicose veins arise when that system fails: valve incompetence permits reflux, the column of blood above transmits its full hydrostatic pressure downward, and the vein wall dilates under a load it was not built to carry. Dilation separates the valve leaflets further, which worsens the reflux, so the process is self-reinforcing once established. Female sex, family history and ageing reflect the connective-tissue and valve characteristics of the vein wall itself. Previous deep vein thrombosis constitutes a distinct pathway, since valve damage from a resolved clot produces secondary insufficiency in a vein that was previously competent.
The non-supplement measures that address this condition are mechanical, and their rationale is transparent: graduated compression opposes the hydrostatic pressure externally, elevation removes it, and calf muscle activity restores the pump. Interventional options address the refluxing segment itself.
No ingredient currently carries an evidence grade against this condition in the collection, and no research paper is linked to it. Traditional venotonic preparations exist and appear in the searches directed at this page, but nothing has been graded here, and an ungraded compound with a long history of use is not the same as one with a documented evidence base.
