Selenium

A trace mineral essential for thyroid function and antioxidant defense.

Selenium is an essential trace mineral incorporated into selenoproteins that serve critical roles in thyroid hormone metabolism (deiodinase enzymes), antioxidant defense (glutathione peroxidases), and immune function. Selenium is particularly important for thyroid health — the thyroid gland contains the highest selenium concentration per gram of any organ. Both deficiency and excess can cause hair loss. The tolerable upper intake level is 400 mcg/day, and selenomethionine is the most bioavailable supplemental form.
