Coenzyme Q10

An antioxidant compound essential for cellular energy production.

Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a lipid-soluble compound found in every cell's mitochondria, where it plays an essential role in the electron transport chain for ATP (energy) production. It also functions as a powerful lipid-soluble antioxidant. CoQ10 production declines with age, and statin medications further reduce levels by inhibiting the mevalonate pathway shared with cholesterol synthesis. Supplemental forms include ubiquinone (oxidized, more common) and ubiquinol (reduced, better absorbed). Clinical evidence supports CoQ10 for statin-related myopathy, heart failure, and migraine prophylaxis.
