Metabolic Syndrome

A cluster of conditions increasing risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when three or more of five criteria are present: elevated waist circumference, high triglycerides (≥150 mg/dL), low HDL cholesterol, elevated blood pressure (≥130/85 mmHg), and elevated fasting glucose (≥100 mg/dL). It affects approximately 35% of US adults and represents a state of chronic low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. Supplements with evidence in metabolic syndrome include berberine (glucose and lipid metabolism), omega-3 (triglyceride reduction), magnesium (insulin sensitivity), chromium (glucose metabolism), and fiber (glucose absorption modulation).
