Antioxidant

A substance that neutralizes free radicals, protecting cells from oxidative damage.

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of donating electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen species (free radicals) without becoming destabilized itself. The body maintains an antioxidant defense system including endogenous enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) and exogenous compounds from diet and supplements (vitamins C and E, selenium, polyphenols). When free radical production exceeds antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress occurs, contributing to aging, inflammation, and various diseases. Hair follicles are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage due to their high metabolic activity.
